Gokarna Temple’s History:
According to legend, the Mahabaleshwar temple was built between 345 and 365 AD. During his reign, Vijayanagara king Sri Krishnadevaraya paid a visit to the temple. This temple was also visited by the great ruler Shivaji.
According to one legend, Lord Shiva cursed Lord Brahma that no one would worship him because of his lie about finding the end of Lord Shiva’s endless beam of light.
As a result, Lord Brahma cursed him and said that Lord Shiva would go to hell. After visiting the underworld, Lord Shiva appeared on Earth through the ear of a cow. As a result, the locals refer to this location as Gokarna.
Another legend has Ravana performing a severe penance to impress Lord Shiva and receiving Atmalinga as a grant. However, Lord Shiva orders that the Atmalinga not be placed on the ground until he arrives at his destination. When Ravana goes for a bath, Lord Ganesh appears in the form of a boy and places the Atmalinga on the ground. So there you have it, Atmalinga. As a result, the area became known as Gokarna.
