It is said that Guru Raghavendra performed penance for Panchamukhi Anjaneya here for a period of twelve years. Anjaneya, Panchamukha, Varaha, Garuda, Narasimha, and Hayagreeva arrived in front of Raghavendra Swamy after being impressed by him. Anjaneya was impressed. Following the sighting of Lord Anjaneya, Sri Raghavendra attained Jeeva Samadhi and became one with the universe.

It is believed that Kolhapur Mahalakshmi, Lord Venkateswara, and Lord Vishnu in Kurmavathar all gave Sri Guru Raghavendra darshan during his time in Kurmavathar. According to the legend, Anjaneya came to this location during the Tretayuga era when he was on his mission to save Rama and Laksmana from Mahiravana. It is believed that Anjaneya traveled to Mahiravana by entering the cave that is located close to the Erukalamba temple.

Outside of the temple, there is a pair of shoes that is widely believed to have belonged to the deity Lord Anjaneya. There will be a lot of people in the temple on major days like Hanuman Jayanthi, Tuesdays, Sundays, the day there is no moon, and Pournami day. During his visit, Lord Anjaneya made use of the enormous rock formations that were located close to the temple as both a bed and a pillow. It is stated that Sri Raghavendra Swamy asked Lord Anjaneya to present himself at this location, hence Lord Anjaneya obliged.
