From the establishment of the Bobbili Kingdom, the royal line has held veneration for Venugopala Swami. Chinna Ranga Rao, a royal descendant, gained control of Bobbili after the terrible conflict that destroyed much of the Bobbili Fort and had a new temple built for the old idol that had been salvaged from the rubble.
