Ratha Sapthami denotes the sun god Surya wheeling his chariot pulled by seven horses in the direction of the northern hemisphere from the northeast. The seven colours of the rainbow are represented by the Ratha and the seven horses, which are referred to as Jaya, Ajaya, Vijaya, Jitha Prana, Jitha Krama, Manojapa, and Jitha Krodha.

The seven horses represent the days of the week, starting on Sunday (Day of God Surya). The 12 wheels on the chariot stand in for the 12 zodiac signs that make up the entire year, or “Samvatsara.” It is believed that worshipping Lord Surya Dev and fasting on this day will atone for the seven different types of sins, including “sins committed in former lifetimes” as well as “sins committed intentionally, unwittingly, through words, thoughts, and body.”
