About 15,000 to 25,000 free meals are served every day at the Sri Venkateswara Temple in Tirumala, and that number increases dramatically during festivals and other joyous events. The cleanliness and efficiency of the temple’s grounds and operations are immediately apparent to any visitor. The amazing effectiveness is due to the work of the Tirupati Tirumala Devasthanam (TTD), a trust that handles the operations of the temple, and its 20,000 regular and contractual staff.
Donations in hundis, rent, investment returns, and sales of laddus, Darshana tickets, and even human hair all help fund the organization. Income projections for 2016–17 are pegged at Rs 2,678 crores or over USD $1 million per day. There’s a great tale behind this. According to legend, Vishnu’s avatar Lord Venkateswara (also called Balaji, Srinivasa, Srivari, and Venkata) had his heart set on marrying Padmavathi, an incarnation of Goddess Laxmi. He planned an extravagant wedding that was attended by a galaxy’s worth of deities and royals. To pay for the festivities, he borrowed heavily from Kubera, the god of wealth.
