A very old temple in Tamil Nadu is the Arunachaleswarar temple in Tiruvannamalai. People say that it is around a thousand years old and that the great saints and poets of Tamil Nadu used to visit it. This god is thought to be very strong, so it is compared to a mountain that can’t be moved. People believe that this god is a part of the hill, so they also call it Annamalaiyar. Six prakarams surround the Arunachaleswarar temple. The pilgrims do Girivalam on the day of the full moon in the month of Girivalam. Every month, lakhs of people take part in this healthy ritual. The Tamil words for hill, “giri,” and “coming around,” “valam,” come from this word, “Girivalam.” So, in Tamil, going around the hill is called Girivalam.

It takes about 14 kilometres to go all the way around the hill on the road. People of all ages always go round on the day of the full moon. It is said to bring a lot of peace or calmness, which is good for mental health and also refreshes the body. The Annamalai hills in Tiruvannamalai, which are Arunachaleswarar’s home, have been seen in different ways over the years. People think that these hills looked different at different times and ages. In the Kirthayugam, it looked like fire. In the next Thretha yugam, it turned into manikkam, which is Tamil for emerald. During the Dweparayugam, it took the shape of gold. Now it looks like a rocky hill in Kaliyugam.
