Vaikuntha Ekadashi is a Hindu festival and celebration. It is mostly observed by Vaishnavas, who consider it a special Ekadashi. It falls on Mokshada Ekadashi or Putrada Ekadashi. It is celebrated on the 11th lunar day of the waxing lunar fortnight of Dhanu’s solar month. In the Gregorian calendar, this falls between December 16 and January 13.

Fasting on Vaikuntha Ekadashi is a significant element of those involved with it. People fast and stay vigil throughout the day. Vishnu Temples Celebrate Vaikunta Ekadasi:

All 108 Divya Desam observe Vaikunta Ekadashi. On Vaikunta Ekadashi, the temple’s northern gate, which is supposed to represent an entrance to ‘Vaikunta, is kept open, and Lord Vishnu is clad in diamond studded armour. The utsava idol, or festival idol, is known as ‘Namperumal,’ and it passes through the ‘Paramapada Vasal,’ or heaven’s entrance. Taking a holy dip in the ponds at Vishnu temples on Vaikunta Ekadashi and Dwadasi (the next day) is similar to taking a holy dip in all the holy rivers or tirthas of the universe.

The Tirumala Venkateswara Temple celebrates Mukkoti Ekadashi, as it is known in Telugu-speaking regions, in a similar manner. Tirumala has a unique entrance known as Vaikuntha Dvaram, which encircles the sanctum sanctorum. The dvaram (portal) is only open on Vaikuntha Ekadashi, and it is claimed that anyone who travels through this ‘Vaikunta Dwaram’ on this day achieves Vaikuntha. For Vaikuntha Ekadashi, the temple sees a large influx of pilgrims and dignitaries.

Vaikunta Ekadasi Pooja Vidhanam:

  • Wake up early. People have traditionally bathed in the sacred waters of rivers like the Ganga and the Yamuna. However, you can add a few drops of Gangajal to the bucket of water in which you will bathe.
  • After showering, put on clean clothes.
  • Lighting an oil lamp and laying it on the altar is how Dhyana is accomplished (meditation).
  • Invoke Lord Vishnu to gain his favour.
  • Sankalpa should be performed (pledge and align your thoughts with the divine).
  • Take Lord Ganesha’s blessings to guarantee that your vrat goes off without a hitch.
  • Water (Jal), sandalwood paste (Chandan), vermillion (Kumkum), uncooked rice mixed with turmeric (Akshat), natural scent (Gandham), flowers (Pushpam), holy basil leaves (Tulsi), incense (Dhoop), lamp (Deepam), and food should be offered to Lord Vishnu (Naivedyam). 
  • You can prepare kheer, halwa, or any other type of delicious treat. You could also include fruits like a brown coconut cut in half, paan and supari, and Dakshina (a few currency coins).
  • Read the Mokshada or the Vaikuntha Ekadashi Vrat Katha.
  • Finish the pooja with aarti (salutations with ignited camphor).
