Arudra Darshan Importance:

Lord Shiva has never been born, so there is no nakshaththram to celebrate his birth. On the happy day of Thiruvaadhirai, He showed up in front of holy saints vyaagra paadha and pathanychali. In Hindu mythology, there was a time when Lord Vishnu was resting on the great serpent, and Adhi seesha thought that he was deep in thought. Lord Vishnu told Adhi seesha that he was thinking about the dance of Lord Shiva when he was asked. This answer made Adhi seesha wish he could see this great dance.

He asked Lord Vishnu how he could make this wish come true. Then, Lord Vishnu told him to do hard work (called “tapas”) at Chithamparam. Adhi seesha took his advice and prayed to Lord Shiva with all his heart for a very long time. At the same time, viyaagra paadha, who was a muni and a follower of Lord Shiva, lived in the same place. He prayed to Lord Shiva to get the legs of a tiger so that he could pick flowers at dawn without being stung by bees to give to God. He also did “tapas” to see His great dancer, “Nataraj.”

Finally, Lord Shiva was happy with their prayers and devotion, so on the day of Thiruvaadhirai, he did his “Nataraj” dance in Chithamparam. Since then, the image of Shiva called “Nataraaja” has been worshipped here with great devotion on this day.

Since the beginning of time, people have known about the glory of the Thiruvadhirai vrata. Saint Vygrapadhar, Munychakchar, and Karkotakan, a snake, did this vrata and were rewarded by being able to see Lord Nataraj’s dance in all its glory. After he did this vrata, Saint Vygrapadhar also had a son named “upamanyu.” Also, Vipular, a Brahmin, did this vratham. He went to Lord Shiva’s abode, Kailash, and came back on a beautiful divine vehicle. After a while, he too was set free. The Thiruvadhirai vrata honours Lord Shiva’s graceful and happy dance, and followers do it to please God and get His blessings.
