Guru Brihaspati and Lord Indra once got into a fight over something that Lord Indra said to Guru Brihaspati. Indra’s instructor and counsellor, Guru Brihaspati, instructed him to make a journey to the earth in order to atone for his bad karma.

After agreeing, Lord Indra fulfilled his Guru’s request. While travelling under the Kadamba tree, Lord Indra came across a shivaling. Later, he realised that Lord Shiva was the one helping him to atone for his sins. He immediately started offering lotus flowers as a sign of devotion to Lord Shiva. This incident took place in Madurai city on the day of the full moon in the Chithirai month. Since then, worshippers have offered pujas at Madurai’s renowned Meenakshi Temple to the Lord.
