History Of Temple
The tale goes that Lord Brahma, commonly known as the creator, wanted to be absolved of his transgressions against Lord Shiva. Because of this, he had erected a “Rudray Aga” and made the area look like a stage, or “Vedik,” hence the “ANTARVEDI” moniker. Brahma erected a statue of Neela Kaneswaran, the Hindu god of good fortune, there. Sage Vashistha had previously built an ashram on this spot, which is now a tributary of the Godavari River. The son of Hiranyaksha, Raktavilochana, later spent nearly 10,000 years in penance on the banks of the Vasishta river, praying to Lord Shiva. Upon seeing Raktavilochana’s repentance, the Lord granted him one wish. Raktavilochana wished for something rather out of the ordinary: that the number of sand grains soaked by the blood drops falling from his body on the ground in battle would produce the same number of Rakshasas, as strong and vigorous as himself, to help him in battle and to merge with him after slaughtering all his enemies. God granted his wish.
The Sage Yagnas were disrupted and Brahmans were persecuted by Raktavilochana as he exploited his power to do so. Sage Vishwamitra saw this as a chance for vengeance and provoked Raktavilochana into killing all one hundred of Sage Vasishta’s sons.
