In Andhra Pradesh and Telangana, the Makara Sankranti holiday lasts for four days. On the first day, Bhogi, people throw away old things and burn them to show that they should focus on new things in life. On the second day, Makara Sankranti, people buy new clothes, make traditional dishes, and decorate their homes with flowers and rangoli. Day 3 is Kanuma festival and day 4 is Mukkanuma festival.

Story of Kanuma:
In Hindu mythology, Lord Krishna did a miracle on Kanuma by lifting the Govardhan hill. Lord Krishna told the people of Gokul to worship the Govardhan hill, which blocked the clouds and made it rain. This made Lord Indra, who was thought to be the rain god at the time, very angry. To get back at Gokul for insulting him, Indra made storms and rain and flooded Gokul. Lord Krishna raised the Govardhan hill to protect the people, cows, and other animals. People were able to stay safe under the hill. Soon, Indra saw how stupid he had been and ran to Krishna for help.

The customs of Kanuma:
- This festival is for cows, bulls, and oxen, which are very important to the farming industry in villages.
- Govardhan puja or go puja is held on this day to honour the cattle.
- On this day, the cows are given baths and painted and adorned with jewellery. They are taken to temples nearby where worship rituals are done.
- Families have to get together, and son-in-laws are especially asked to come to this festival and be a part of the family unions. On this day, special food that isn’t vegetarian is made for the grand feast.
- During Kanuma, people bet on the cattle, and bull fights are held.
- Farmers show off their wealth by decorating the healthiest bulls with jewellery and leading them in parades. Sannai music is played during these processions.
- In the past, this was also the time when cockfighting games were played. During this festival, you can also bet on movie stars.
- A big part of this festival is the movies. During this time, there are a lot of movies coming out because families like to watch movies together.
- Ariselu, which is made of rice flour and jaggery, puliharam, or tamarind rice, laddu, sweet pongal, moong dal payasam, bobbabatlu, or puran poli, and cracked wheat halwa are some of the special dishes served at this festival.
- During this festival, people give money to people who are in need.
