The Sri Sita Ramachandra Swamy temple honors Rama, a Vishnu incarnation. It lies in Bhadrachalam, east Telangana, on the Godavari River. Bhadrachalam, also known as Bhadradri, is one of Godavari’s Divya Kshetrams and Dakshina Ayodhya. The four-armed Vaikuntha Rama, Vishnu’s form that answered Bhadra’s petitions, is the major image, thought to be self-manifested.
The primary image features Rama’s wife Sita and brother Lakshmana. The 17th-century Bhakti saint Kancherla Gopanna, also known as Bhadrachala Ramadasu, erected or restored the Bhadrachalam temple. During Golconda’s final Sultan, Abul Hasan Qutb Shah, Gopana was Bhadrachalam’s tax officer (Tana Shah). Gopana was arrested for building the Sita Ramachandra Swamy temple with Sultanate treasury cash.

He wrote bhakti songs in prison for 12 years. Gopana was liberated by Sultan Tana Shah when Lord Rama appeared with Lakshmana to pay the gold coins Sultan requested for Gopana’s release before Golconda Empire crumbled during Aurangzeb’s Mughal advance into the Deccan region. As flash floods on the Godavari River threatened the temple in August 1986, it was in dire straits. Once the floodwaters receded, the town’s major streets and various buildings, including cottages, were submerged in water for over five days.
It’s likely that many locals sought refuge in the temple’s sanctuaries. Just the gopuram (the tower at the front of the kalyana mandapam) was above water (temple tower). P. Seshacharyulu and the other priests stayed in the temple throughout the floods and continued with the daily rites as usual. Both Telangana and Andhra Pradesh claimed the Bhadrachalam temple as their own during the Telangana agitation. It was made clear by Telangana lawmakers and activists that they would not allow Bhadrachalam to be split off from the rest of the state.
