Tiruttani is one of Skanda’s (Lord Subramanya’s) six Padai Veedu shrines, and it represents the site where Subramanya stayed after defeating the demon Surapadman. Tiruttani is said to be the location where Lord Subramanya married Valli, one of his two consorts.
Tiruttani’s beautiful Lord Muruga temple crowns a single rock 700 feet above sea level. It is set among hills with a spectacular panoramic view. This sacred site is located on the Chennai-Mumbai highway, 13 kilometers from Arkonam and 84 kilometers from Chennai.
According to legend, Indra, King of the Gods, married Skanda’s daughter Deivayanai and presented his elephant Airavatam as part of his offering. When Airavatam left, it was the beginning of the end for Indra’s good fortune. According to the myth, Subramanian made an offer to return the white elephant; however, Indra, who was constrained by convention, refused to accept a gift and asked that the elephant face him instead. As a result, the elephant image in this temple also faces east.
