SABARIMALA TEMPLE
In Kerala, India, near Sabarimala Hill in the Periyar Tiger Reserve’s Perinad Village’s Pathanamthitta District, there is a complex of temples known as Sabarimala. With an estimated 40 to 50 million (4 to 5 crore) devotees visiting each year, it is one of the busiest annual pilgrimage destinations in the world. The shrine is devoted to Ayyappan, also known as Dharma Shasta, a god who is the son of Shiva and Mohini, the female representation of Vishnu.The temple is surrounded by mountains and the thick forests and is perched on top of one of 18 hills at an elevation of 1,260 metres also we say it as 4,134 feet above sea level. Poonkaavanam is the name of the lush forest that surrounds the temple and is a part of the Periyar Tiger Reserve. Each of the hills that surround Sabarimala has a temple.Only certain days of the year are designated as holy days in the temple. Birth and History of Lord Ayyappa
There are various iterations of the Lord Ayyappa incarnation tales in circulation. At the commencement of the current Chatur Yuga, during the Koorma Avatar the Vedic or Puranic god Harihara Putra was created by the holy union of the Sivaand the Mohini.the feminine form of Vishnu. Another tradition describes Vrikasura’s (Bhasmasura’s) slaying during Vishnu’s second iteration as Mohini, in a later era.
Then there is Manikantan, a historical figure associated with the Pandya dynasty of Madurai in modern-day Tamil Nadu. This dates back to almost 800 years.
The Mandala Vratam
Mandala Vratam refers to the 41-day Mandala of austerity observed by Lord Ayyappa’s devotees and followers. During the “Vratam” time, a straightforward, holy lifestyle devoid of all vices is required. Wearing a mala signifies the beginning of “Vratam.” On a Saturday or the day of Utram, the astral sign deemed lucky, devotees may choose to wear the Mala. Lord Ayyappa’s natal star is Utram. The purpose of the 41-day “Vratam” is to establish healthy habits of discipline and practise. It all comes down to creating positive habits over time, which can be done by exercising restraint and praying. Black is the suggested colour for clothing during the “Vratam” period since it symbolises separation from material.
Kettunirakkal/Irumudi
This ceremony involves getting “Irumudi kettu” ready and packing it for the pilgrimage to Sabarimala. It is made under a Guruswamy’s supervision. Only those who wear the Irumudi kettu on their heads are permitted to ascend the 18 holy steps that lead to the temple because they are thought to have observed the austerities and are therefore qualified to do so.Others who wish to approach the sanctum sanctorum for worship must use a different passageway to the north. After the opening prayers in the Kettunira, the sacred offering of ghee (clarified cow’s butter) is placed into a coconut after the fibrous shell has been removed.
