Atla Taddi’s Backstory:

In mythology, Goddess Gauri recommends Atla Taddi to all young, single women so that they may receive Her favour in finding a suitable husband. Once upon a time, the princess of a great kingdom tried to fast according to Atla Taddi in order to please the Goddess, but she passed out from thirst and hunger and was unable to finish the fast. After witnessing her plight, her brothers took action to rescue her and presented her with a mirror reflecting a fire that seemed like the moon to her.

When the princess finally reached adulthood and a suitor was sought for her, nobody could find a young man who was eligible to be her husband. Finally, her brothers arranged her marriage to an elderly guy. The princess rushed out into the woods, where she wept bitterly under a banyan tree. When Lord Shiva and Goddess Parvati saw her plight, they materialised in front of her to tell her that she was in this predicament because she had botched the Atla Taddi procedure. The princess then returned to perform the festival ceremonies as instructed, and soon after, she wed a handsome young man of her choosing.

The Atla Taddi Rituals:

• Every woman and girl celebrates this day by rising early, taking a holy plunge, and then eating Suddi before the sun comes up. This dish is made up of rice, curd, and a unique chutney called Gongura.
• They don’t eat or drink anything all day long, not even water, in preparation for their nighttime moon worship.
• Women and girls decorate their hands with mehendi before Atla Taddi. Traditional dress for married women includes lots of jewellery and other symbols of matrimony.
• The day is filled with traditional festival songs, swing dancing, and the cooking of festive dishes.
• When the women of a village see the full moon reflected in the lake later that night, they worship Goddess Gauri by presenting her with 10 dosas.
• Other married women also receive ten dosas and a thoram.
• Prepared on a bed of rice, the kalisam is used in rituals. This also contains flowers, money, mango leaves, turmeric, and kumkum.
• Sweet rice flour, jaggery, and milk dish called Paltalikelu, along with sambar with eleven vegetables and gonghura pachadi, are just a few of the delicacies reserved for Atla Taddi.
