Kartik Purnima is a Hindu, Sikh, and Jain holiday held on the full moon/Purnima day or the fifteenth lunar day of the month of Kartik (November-December). Kartik Purnima falls on November 8, 2022 this year (Tuesday).
Kartik Purnima Katha:
Tarakaksha, Kamalaksha, and Vidyunmali, the sons of the demon Tarakasura, wished to avenge the Devas after Lord Kartikeya slew their father, according to a narrative related with this festival. The three demon brothers did severe penance in order to please Lord Brahma and receive the boon of immortality and rule over the entire universe.
They practised austerities for years and were successful in attracting Lord Brahma’s notice. Brahma, however, refused to grant the boon because immortality violated the fundamental laws of the universe. As a result, the three sought Brahma’s blessings by requesting a boon that would protect them from death. According to the boon, the trio used gold, silver, and iron to construct three forts: one in heaven, one in the sky, and one on Earth.

Once a year, all three forts (known collectively as Tripura) would align, and the person who destroyed all three forts with a single arrow would be the cause of their deaths. Lord Shiva then appeared as Tripurari to destroy Tripura and kill Tripurasura in order to restore harmony.
Vidhi Kartik Purnima Puja:
- On Kartik Purnima, you might perform a Satyanarayan Puja or worship Lord Shiva or Lord Kartikeya.
- Nonetheless, the puja must begin with Lord Ganesha’s prayers.
- Cover a wooden chowki with a piece of red or yellow cloth and sprinkle with Gangajal.
- Install an idol or image of Lord Ganesha, Lord Vishnu, Shiva, or Lord Kartikeya.
- Turn on an oil/ghee lamp.
- Offer water to Lord Ganesha, then Haldi, Chandan Kumkum, Akshat, mauli, janeu, gandham (perfume) pushpam) flowers, durva grass, deepam (light), dhoop (incense), and naivedhya (food).
- Then, present the tamboolam, which includes two paan leaves, supari, dakshina, and fruits.
- Seek Lord Ganesha’s blessings, and then repeat the process for Lord Vishnu, Lord Shiva, and Lord Kartikeya’s puja.
- Instead of Durva grass, give Lord Vishnu Tulsi, Lord Shiva Vilva, and Lord Kartikeya flowers or panchamrit. Lord Shiva should not be offered Kumkuma.
- The Kartik Purnima Vrat Katha should be read.
- Perform the aarti after you have finished praying.
- Finish the pooja.
Samagri Kartik Purnima Puja:
- A chowki made of wood
- Lord Vishnu, Lord Shiva, Lord Ganesha, and Lord Kartikeya idols or images (You may perform puja for any or all of the deities. However, start the puja by worshipping Lord Ganesha).
- A yellow cloth for covering the chowki.
- Gangajal
- Lamp made of earth or brass
- Lamp oil or ghee
- Haldi (turmeric powder) (turmeric powder)
- Roli Akshat/Chandan Kumkum (raw rice mixed with turmeric powder)
- Bel Patras (for Lord Shiva)
