Kedara Gauri Vrat, also known as ‘Kedareshwar Vrata,’ is an auspicious Hindu festival held on the ‘Amavasya’ (no moon day) during the well-known Diwali festivities. This vrat is dedicated to Lord Shiva’s worship. According to Hindu mythology, Goddess Parvati observed the Kedara Gauri Vrat in order to become a portion of Lord Shiva. Kedara Gauri Vrat is observed in the northern portions of India on the Amavasya of the ‘Kartik’ month, whereas it is observed in the other regions on the ‘Ashwin’ Amavasya.

Initially, the fast began on the eighth day of the Krishna Paksha (the dark fortnight of the moon) during the ‘Kartik’ or ‘Ashwin’ month and ended on Amavasya during Diwali. However, in modern times, the Kedara Gauri Vrat is exclusively commemorated on Amavasi Day, popularly known as ‘Deepavali.’ It is celebrated with tremendous zeal and merriment throughout India, particularly in the southern states.

Kedara Gauri Vrat is one of the most important Saivite vratas that Lord Shiva devotees observe with zeal.
According to tradition, Devi Parvati witnessed this vratam to merge with Lord Shiva, after which He was known as ‘Ardha Nareeshwara’. Lord Vishnu performed this vrat to become Lord of Vaikunta, and Lord Brahma obtained his Hamsa Vahan after performing this vrat. It is so thought that a person who performs the Kedara Gauri Vrat 21 times fervently will be rewarded with all worldly desires and eventually achieve ‘Moksha’ by merging with the Supreme Being. This auspicious vratam is thus observed by all people, regardless of caste, creed, or religious affiliation.
On the day of Kedara Gauri Vrat, 21 various types of ‘Naivedyam’ are cooked and offered to the Lord. This vrat observer must also invite 21 Brahmins and provide them with food, clothing, and money. Fasting is an important daily ritual. The Kedara Gauri Vrat is observed for 21 days in some areas, but most devotees now observe a single day fast. The person who practises this vrat does not drink or eat anything till the puja is completed. After feeding the Brahmins, only one meal is permitted. Partial fasting is permitted on Kedara Gauri Vrat if someone is unable to sustain a complete fast for any reason. Devotees can eat fruits and dairy products in this.
