The Sabarimala Temple in Kerala is a world-renowned Swamy Ayyappan temple located at an elevation of 914 metres. Mandala Kalam, also known as Mandala Masam, is the main pilgrimage season at Sabarimala Temple.
According to the traditional Malayalam calendar, pilgrimage to the hill shrine begins on the first day of the Vrishchikam month and finishes on the eleventh day of the Dhanu month. This time corresponds to the months of December and January in the Gregorian calendar. Mandala Kalam lasts 41 days, during which millions of devotees from all over the world flock to the Sabarimala Sree Dharma Sastha Temple.

The Importance of Mandala Kalam:
Sabarimala Temple is an important pilgrimage destination nestled in the Sabari Hills’ forests. According to mythology, Lord Ayyappa meditated here after defeating the monster ‘Mahishi.’ Mandala Kalam or Mandala Masam is a 41-day period dedicated to the Sabarimala shrine. During this time, believers practise rigorous austerity. After the 41-day pilgrimage season, Lord Ayyappa Temple closes for three days before reopening for darshan on the fourth day.

People of any religion are welcome to attend the Sabarimala Temple because there is no caste or creed discrimination. Female devotees aged 10 to 50 are not permitted to enter the Sabarimala Temple during the Mandala Kalam period. The yearly pilgrimage season to the famous Sabarimala Temple lasts from mid-November to mid-January and culminates with the ‘Makaravilakku’ celebrations. During Mandala Kalam, millions of devotees flock to the Sabarimala Shrine to offer sacred prayers to Lord Ayyappa.
Sabarimala 2022 Mandala Kalam Vratham:
Vratam, or fasting, is an intrinsic aspect of Mandala Puja, which is practised with complete dedication and strictness by the traditional and orthodox people of South India.
- People who go on pilgrimage to the Sabarimala shrine must also live in asceticism. During Mandala Puja, worshippers live a holy and modest life.
- Devotees wear a Rudraksha or Tulsi mala with Lord Ayyappa’s locket until they enter the Sabarimala Ayyappa Temple, at which point they remove the Mala. During this time, followers are referred to as ‘Swami’ or ‘Ayyappan.’
- During Mandala Puja, worshippers must keep their bodies and minds pure, and they must abstain from all worldly pleasures.
- During the Mandala Puja, all devotees visiting the Sabarimala shrine must abstain from alcohol and smoking.
- It is critical to pray twice a day. During this time, they must refrain from having sex and avoid hurting the feelings of others.
- Makaravilakku is another name for Mandala Pooja. This is held every year on the 14th and 16th of January. The procession starts with Lord Ayyappa’s jewels being carried to Sabarimala’s Old Pandalam Palace.
- Among these is the Krishnaparuntu (the Brahminy Kite), which is thought to be Lord Vishnu’s conveyance, soaring high above till the jewels reach the castle. Then, as a symbol of homage to Lord Ayappan, it circles around 9 times above Sannidhanam in Sabarimala.
- The sole star visible to us will be the Makara Jyoti, which denotes the ritual’s specialty. During this time, the Lord Ayappan Idol is jeweled, and devotees chant “Swamiye Saranam Ayyappa.”
- The star mysteriously vanishes after the Lord is adorned in gems. Finally, a beautiful effulgence or Makaravilakku glows three times from the hills opposite Sabarimala, bringing the fortunate rite to a close.
