People have always said that Ganesha was made by the Goddess Parvati, who is Lord Shiva’s wife. Goddess Parvati created Lord Ganesha out of the turmeric paste that she use daily for her bath and breathed life into the figure. She then told him to watch her door while she took a bath. Shiva came back, and Ganesha, who didn’t know Shiva, got in his way. Shiva got angry and cut off the boy’s head, killing him. When Parvati saw that her son was dead, she was sad. Shiva, realising he had made a mistake, said that her son would live. Brahma, who made life, told Shiva to use the head of the first animal he saw in the forest. The first animal was an elephant calf, and Ganesha was brought back to life with its head. Shiva.declared the boy be called “Ganesha” – lord of Ganas. Hence, Ganesha came to be depicted as the elephant-headed god
