Uthirakosamangai temple:

Uthirakosamangai, also known as Mangalanatha Swamy temple, is a Shaiva temple near Ramanathapuram in Tamil Nadu’s Ramanathapuram district. Uthira Kosa Mangai is a very small hamlet. It is thought to be one of the oldest Hindu temples, as described in Tamil literature as “Mann Mundhiyo Mangai Mundhiyo?” which means “Did the mud (mann) come first or is the Mangai (The Female Deity of the Temple)” This is the place where lord Siva revealed the treasures of the Vedas to Parvati. Because Uthiram signifies (upadesam) kosam (secrets) Parvati (Mangai), this location is also known as Uthira Kosa Mangai. The temple is thought to have been erected by the Pandya kings.

The temple is revered in the same way as Ramanathapuram, Sethu Madhava Theertham, and Lakshmana Theertham are. Nataraja’s emerald figure is anointed with sandal paste all year, except on Tiruvathidirai festival day, when special adoration is performed. [6] It is claimed that even little vibrations can destroy the image and so no percussion instruments are utilised during devotional practises.

Every afternoon, lingams constructed of Padigam (spatika) are anointed with cooked rice in the front hall. According to Hindu legend, while Vishnu and Brahma fought for supremacy, Shiva emerged as a flame and challenged them to identify his source. Brahma transformed into a swan and flew to the sky to witness the peak of the flame, while Vishnu transformed into the boar Varaha and sought its base.

Neither Brahma nor Vishnu could uncover the source, and while Vishnu admitted defeat, Brahma lied using a thazhambu (Pandanus odorifer flower / Screw Pine Flower / Ketaki flower) and claimed to have discovered the pinnacle. As a retribution, Shiva decreed that Brahma would never have temples on Earth for his worship, thus all Shiva temples do not use thazhambu during worship. This is one among such temple where thazhambu is still used for worship practises. This tale can be found in Shaivaite scriptures.
