Durga Puja, also called Durgotsava or Sharadotsav, is an annual Hindu festival that started on the Indian subcontinent. It honours and reveres the goddess Durga and celebrates her victory over Mahishasur.

The festival is held in the month of Ashwin on the Indian calendar, which is September or October on the Gregorian calendar. Durga Puja is a festival that lasts for ten days, with the last five being the most important. People perform the puja at home and in public, where there is a temporary stage and other decorations (known as pandals). The festival is also marked by readings from the Bible, performances of art, partying, giving gifts, visiting family, eating, and walking through the streets. Durga puja is a big Hindu holiday that is part of the Shaktism tradition. UNESCO will add Kolkata’s Durga Puja to its list of intangible cultural heritage in December 2021.

Significance of Durga Puja festival:

During Durga Puja, the main goddess worshipped is Durga, but other important Hindu gods and goddesses are also honoured. These include Lakshmi, the goddess of wealth and prosperity, Saraswati, the goddess of knowledge and music, Ganesha, the god of good beginnings, and Kartikeya, the god of war (the god of war).

Why Durga Puja is Important:

Hindu mythology says that the festival marks the time when Goddess Durga and her children went back to the place where she was born. Mahalaya comes before Durga Puja. It is the start of Durga’s journey to her home. The actual puja begins on the sixth day, which is called “Maha Sashthi.” This is when the devotees welcome the Goddess with a lot of pomp and excitement. On this day, the public gets to see Durga’s idol for the first time. During the puja, the “dhakis” play the “dhak,” a type of drum that is associated with the puja and Bengali culture, to keep the mood and spirit of the puja alive.

Rituals and regular habits:

Durga puja is a ten-day event, and the last five days are filled with rituals and practises. The festival starts with Mahalaya, a day when Hindus do tarpana by giving their dead ancestors water and food. On this day, Durga is also said to come from her mythical home in Kailash, where she lives with her husband. 

• The sixth day (Sashthi), which is the next important day of the festival, is when devotees welcome the goddess and start the celebrations. 
• On the seventh day (Saptami), the eighth day (Ashtami), and the ninth day (Navami), the goddess is honoured along with Lakshmi, Saraswati, Ganesha, and Kartikeya. 
• These days are the most important ones for worship, and they include reciting scriptures, performing puja, reading Durga’s stories from the Devi Mahatmya, and making social visits to elaborately decorated and lit up pandals, which are temporary
