Our scriptures say that doing it at the wrong time can make Goddess Shakti angry. During Amavasya and at night, you can’t do Ghatasthapana.
The first one-third of the day is the best time of day to do Ghatasthapana. If you can’t do Ghatasthapana at that time for some reason, you can do it during Abhijit Muhurta. During Ghatasthapana, it is best to avoid the phases of Chitra Nakshatra and Vaidhriti Yoga, but they are not forbidden.
